Despite the heat, on August 25th and 26th, the Taft Union High School Varsity Girls tennis team managed to go undefeated to win the 12-team Wasco doubles tournament.

Coach Carnal proudly claimed, “I expected us to win this tournament and the girls came through. I was worried when we were playing West because we were behind on three of the four courts, but the girls came back on two of those. This was a great tournament for us because assistant coach, Bill Friend, stressed the importance of doubles and that has always been our strength. The win over Selma felt good because the last time we played them they beat us in the Division 4 Valley finals in 2013.”

Taft swept Division 4 teams 4-0 each, beat Division 3 teams 3-1 each, and advanced to the finals vs. North, which was also 5-0. Taft lost the top two doubles matches with 8-6 each, but the No. 3 doubles team, Elizabeth Huizar and Alondra Cisneros, won 8-4. The Woggn sisters, Cielo and Yuvia, won with a great score of 8-1, to give Taft the win, 2-2, 28-21 in the games.

Alondra Cisneros went 6-0 at 3 and 4 doubles, Rosa Silva and Yuvia Woggn were 3-0 at 4 doubles. Leighton May and Dariana Calderon were 5-1 at No. 1 doubles, Elizabeth Huizar was 5-1 at No. 3 doubles and Cielo Woggn was 5-1 at 3 and 4 doubles. Ivonne Gutierrez was 1-0 at 4 double.  Brisa Guizar and Diana Huizar were  3-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Taft lost Division 2 powerhouse Bakersfield High, 8-1, at home Thursday with Elizabeth Huizar picking up the only win at 5 singles. Three of the six single matches went to tiebreakers, BHS unfortunately won two of them.

All matches during the last week of August were cancelled due to excessive heat and poor air quality, but make sure to keep your eyes set on our Lady Cats as we enter league with 6-1 overall record.
