Taft High varsity team headed to Area
The varsity individual playoffs of Taft High girls took place at Arvin on Wednesday & Thursday. Each of the league’s seven teams entered the tournament with two singles & two doubles teams. The top six in singles and doubles head to the Garces Area tournament Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2.
Taft’s singles were #1 Valerie Munoz and #2 Arelie Paz, both seeded: Munoz at #1 and Paz at #2. Munoz beat the Zarate 6-0, 6-0 from Wasco and beat Chavz Domingo 6-1, 6-2 in the first half. Paz beat Arvin’s Martinez 6-0, 6-1, and then Camacho 6-2, 6-0 beat Shafter in the semis. With Munoz defeating Paz 6-1, 6-4, this set up an all-Taft final.
Jessica De La Cruz and Jeidy Perez played doubles for Taft, and Cindy Perez and Gaby Aguilar played the second game. All teams have been seeded at #1 with De La Cruz and Perez. The Cindy Perez and Gaby Aguilar team and has been seeded #2.
De La Cruz and J. Perez won the tournament with victories over Wasco’s Barbosa and Williams, Pablate and RFK’s Arredondo, a Wasco’s Vidales and Rodriques. The final match was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 marathon. C. Perez and Aguilar finished third with victories over RFK’s Garcia and Fernando and Shafter’s Gil and Ponce. They lost to Vaidales and Rodrigues’s Wasco squad in the semifinals. This set up the match for 3rd place against RFK’s Pablate and Arredondo. Taft lost the first set 4-6, but returned to win the second in a 7-6 tiebreaker, winning the third set 6-2.
Medals were awarded for places 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and a medal was awarded to all 6 Taft girls. Details about Valley Playoffs will be available on Monday, and Taft is expected to get a high seed.
