Varsity tennis keeps winning streak alive

The Taft High boys varsity tennis team traveled to Wasco on Thursday, and beat a determined Wasco team 6-3.  This was a battle of the two first place teams in the league. Taft entered the match at 3-0, and Wasco was 2-0.  After singles play, the match was tied at 3-3. Taft swept the 3 doubles matches, making the final team score 6-3.  Taft is alone in the first place position at 4-0 in SSL play. Wasco is second, and Caesar Chavez is third.

Individually, #1 Brian Rivera was the first player to finish a singles match, and beat Wasco’s Juan Rios 6-1, 7-6. At #3 singles, Tyler Nyguen beat rival Dylan Villalobos 6-4, 7-6. Taft’s third win in singles came from #5 Bryson Ginn, who beat Efren Vargas 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles, Taft’s #3 team of Antonio Guzman and German Mejia were the first doubles team to win at 6-0, 6-1.  Taft’s #1 doubles team of Rivera and Nyguen won a hard fought match at 6-4, 7-6. Taft’s final win came at #2 doubles with Rudolpho Magana and Jordan Miranda winning at 6-3, 6-3.

Taft won all three tiebreakers that were played in the overall match.

Taft hosts Arvin on Tuesday, and then starts the second half of league play against RFK at home on Thursday. Taft will travel to Bakersfield to play in the Lynch Cup on Friday and Saturday.
