Golfers take first place in first SSL match

Aylline Narvaez

The top six girls on the golf team, Tayler Portenga, Skyla Jensen, Alexandra Cannon, Jadynn Rosenberger, Macayla Wells and Isabella Martinez, Stop to take a quick picture on the driving range. Tayler Portenga is visibly annoyed with the rest of them because they interrupted her practice time. Other than that everyone is excited for their first league match.

The girls’ golf team played their first nine-hole SSL match of the season at North Kern Golf Course on Aug. 30 and proudly took first place, with a total score of 235. The course greatly improved from last season, thanks to Alan Sorensen. The fairways were green and the greens were trimmed to perfection. The team consisted of all returning players representing grades 10-12.The Wildcats exhibited honesty and hard work on the course.

Taft’s No. 4, Tayler Portenga, finished strong and eagled hole nine, which is a rigorous feat. There were a few discrepancies after the match with Wasco and Chavez. Wasco’s team was disqualified because two of their players were in breach of code 5.14.5: High school golfers cannot have contact with anyone during a match, other than a coach. The Caesar Chavez coach noticed some out-of-the-ordinary play on his team’s part, and was very honest about what had happened, correcting the mistake. Golf is a game of honesty and everyone appreciates an honest player. Kennedy was scoreless because their team did not show up. All-in-all it was a great start of the season for the Wildcats, who have not been in first place since the early 2000s.
