Girls’ tennis team rallies after loss
The Taft High girls’ tennis teams had a hard time keeping up in their non-league matches against the much larger teams of Bakersfield High School.
The varsity girls lost 1-8 in their match at BHS, with Junior Valerie Munoz scoring the only set win for her team. Ivonne Gutierrez and Gaby Aguilar fought hard, taking their matches into tie breakers, but in the end lost 10-12 and 9-11, respectively.
On Thursday, August 30 they played against McFarland. The Taft High varsity girls had a winning streak with a 9-0 win against McFarland, making them 3-for-3 for the season so far.
On August 31, the tennis team played against Tehachapi. The varsity players Diana Huizar, Ivonne Gutierrez, Gaby Aguilar, and Jessica DeLaCruz all won their singles matches. Diana Huizar and Gaby Aguilar led their doubles teams to victory.
The Taft JV Girls found themselves a little outmatched up against the BHS travel team, which consisted entirely of veteran players. Taft players Kayleigh Pence and Aleena Nelson played number-one doubles and gave BHS a run for their money, but eventually lost in a tie breaker. The final JV score was 0-8.
The JV girls had an away game, on August 30, against McFarland. When they arrived, they had no one to play against because McFarland does not have a JV team; therefore, they decided that, once they got home, they were going to physically and mentally prepare themselves for their match against Tehachapi.
Even though Taft Highs’ JV team are all newcomers, they were equally matched with the Tehachapi team. Kayleigh Pence, Cristal Martinez, Ana Solorzano, and Carmen Sebastian all won their singles matches. Cristal Martinez and Ana Solorzano were teamed up and won the doubles match. Callie White and Allie Barnachia showed how great they are by winning their 8-game pro set in a tie breaker.
Both varsity and JV teams won the non-league matches against Tehachapi with identical 6-3 scores. After their loss, these girls proved themself and showed their A-game. Please congratulate these girls for winning their matches if you see them.
