Taft High’s varsity boys’ tennis team decidedly won its quarterfinal Valley playoff game against the Selma Bears, 8-1, Tuesday.

The Wildcats, the No. 1 seed in Division III, will host No. 4 seed Yosemite of Oakhurst at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10. Yosemite beat No. 5 seed Dinuba, 7-2. Last year, Dinuba beat Yosemite in the Division IV finals, 5-2, causing both teams to be moved up to Division III.

Taft swept the top five singles spots against the No. 8 seeded Selma. Enrique Reyes was the first one off the court with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Raj Bains. Sawyer Maier beat Darpreet Dhillon, 6-0, 6-4. Rodolfo Magana beat Simran Bains, 7-5, 6-2. Tyler Nguyen beat Mahtab Gill, 6-1, 6-3. Brian Rivera beat Fidel Felix, 6-2, 6-1. Selma earned its sole point at No. 6 singles when Jacob Harris beat Taft’s Jose Ramirez, 7-5, 7-5.

With the game won, the coaches agreed to play eight-game pro sets at doubles. Reyes and Magana beat the Bains brothers, a senior and sophomore, 8-1. Nguyen and Jordan Miranda beat Gill and Amit Dadra, 8-1. And, Bryson Ginn and Antonio Guzman recorded the only shutout of the day, 8-0, over Felix and Fernando Leanos.

Taft improved to 20-6 overall; Selma, which plays in the tough Central Sequoia League with Central Valley Christian, Immanuel and Dinuba, finished its season at 6-10.
