Tennis Wins Friday
Taft High’s varsity boys tennis team shut out the Robert F. Kennedy Thunderbirds again, 9-0, Friday in a decidedly one-sided affair. In games it was 108-11.
Kennedy did not field a JV team, but Taft’s JV traveled to Foothill and beat the Trojans again, 6-3.
Varsity No. 1 Enrique Reyes was the first one off the court with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Jonathan Hernandez. Rodolfo Magana beat Jerom Butan, 6-1, 6-1. Sawyer Maier shut out Javier Trujillo, 6-0, 6-0. Tyler Nguyen beat Gian Beltran, 6-0, 6-1. Brian Rivera beat Ronil Lagula, 6-1, 6-0. And, Jose Ramirez beat Angelo Cabrillas, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Taft coach Jim Carnal sat No. 1 Reyes and No. 3 Maier. Magana and Nguyen beat Hernandez and Lagula, 6-1, 6-0. In the closest match of the day, No. 6 Jordan Miranda and No. 9 Jose Osornio beat No. 2 Butan and No. 4 Beltran, 6-0, 6-3. Bryson Ginn and Antonio Guzman beat Angel Aguilar and Rodrigo Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1.
Taft improved to 15-6 overall; 8-2 in the South Sequoia League.
Kennedy dropped to 2-9 in the SSL.
In the JV game at Foothill, the Trojans won the top two singles matches but then it was all Taft. Marvin Gama lost to Alexis Torres, 8-3. And, Adrian Luna lost to Marcas Larios, 8-4. But then Rutic Bhakta beat Giovanni Perez, 8-5. Fernando Campos beat Tristan Coston, 8-1. And, German Mejia beat Victor Capiz, 8-1. Taft forfeit No. 6 singles because they did not bring a required eighth player.
Taft swept the doubles. Gama and Luna beat the boys who had beaten them in singles, Torres and Larios, 8-6. Bhakta and Campos beat Perez and Coston, 8-4. And, Mejia and Wilbur Ramirez beat Christian Gutierrez and Nathan Garcia, 8-7.
Taft’s JV improved to 17-6.
