Taft High Tennis Stays Strong

ARVIN — The Taft High’s varsity boys tennis team closed out its league away games with a second shut out of the Arvin Bears, 9-0, Wednesday.

In a home match, Taft’s JV team beat Arvin, 8-1.

Varsity No. 1 Enrique Reyes shut out Dylan Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0. Rodolfo Magana beat Julian Alias, 6-1, 6-4. Sawyer Maier beat German Galvez, 6-2, 6-3.

Brian Rivera was the first one off the court with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Brian Marquez. Jose Ramirez beat Carlos Rubalcava, 6-3, 6-1. And, Jose Osornio, beat Hilario Villa, 6-1, 6-0.

With the game won, Taft coach Jim Carnal sat his top player. At No. 1 doubles, Magana and Maier beat Mendoza and Rubalcava, 6-2, 6-4. Brian Rivera and Jose Ramirez beat Galvez and Marquez, 6-1, 6-1. And, in by far the most competitive match of the day, Bryson Ginn and Antonio Guzman got past Luis Delgadillo and Jose Gomez, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.

Taft improved to 14-6 overall; 7-2 in the South Sequoia League.

Arvin dropped to 5-5 in the SSL.

In the JV match, at No. 1 singles, Marvin Gama beat Abelardo Penaloza, 6-3, 6-3. Rutic Bhakta beat I. Neri, 6-0, 6-2. Arvin got its only point when C. Arellano came from behind to beat Fernando Campos 6-7, 7-5, 7-3. Taft won all the rest of the matches. Martin Escobedo beat J. Sanchez, 6-0, 6-1. Andrew Rosales beat J. Reyes, 6-2, 6-3. And, German Mejia beat R. Herrara, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Gama and Campos shut out Penaloza and Neri, 8-0. Bhakta and Escobedo shut out Arellano and Reyes, 8-0. And Wilber Ramirez-Tinoco and Juan Guerrero beat A. Abego and D. Reyes, 6-4, 6-2.

In recent matches, Taft’s JV beat Foothill, 5-4, April 6, and lost to BCHS, 7-2, April 4. Taft’s JV improved to 16-6 overall; 2-1 in the SSL.
