Tennis Beats Frontier 9-0
Taft High’s varsity boys tennis team shellacked the Frontier Titans, 9-0, Tuesday in a match that Taft coach Jim Carnal said was not as close as it sounded.
“I don’t recall ever beating Frontier that badly or any other Division I team in Bakersfield,” Carnal said. In games it was 66-13.
Taft’s JV swept the doubles at home to squeak by Frontier, 5-4, and improve to 5-0.
Varsity No. 1 Enrique Reyes beat Chase VanderZwan, 8-2. Rodolfo Magana was the first one off the court with an 8-1 win over Tyler Howard. Sawyer Maier disposed of Cristian Morillo, 8-1. Likewise, Tyler Nguyen beat Joel Alexander, 8-1. In the closest match of the day, Brian Rivera was a bit steadier than Toby Molina, 8-5. Making his varsity debut, Jose Ramirez swept past Carl Dyahan, 8-2.
Frontier coach Elton Evans elected to forgo eight-game pro sets in doubles and instead played just one six-game set.
Reyes and Magana shut out VanderZwan and Howard, 6-0. Likewise, Maier and Nguyen skunked Morillo and Alexander, 6-0. Bryson Ginn and Antonio Guzman beat brothers John and Joseph Chung, 6-1.
Taft improved to 2-0
In the JV match, No. 1 freshman Fernando Campos won 8-5. Freshman Andrew Rosales lost, 8-6. Martin Escobedo lost, 8-7. Freshman Yair Ruiz lost, 8-5. James Clark lost, 8-4. German Mejia kept Taft’s hopes alive with an 8-5 win.
Taft had to sweep the doubles to win and did. Campos and Rosales won, 8-5. Escobedo and Clark won 8-6. And, Rutic Bhakta and Wilber Ramirez-Tonoco won in a shut out, 8-0.
