Sentimental Senior Night and a Win Last Week
The varsity basketball Lady ‘Cats played two league games the week of 2/6-8.
Tuesday, Feb. 6 was the ladies’ Senior Night when they played the Chavez Titans. Unfortunately, the girls took a loss to the Titans with a score of 49-38. It was an eventful, bittersweet night for the Wildcats. Seniors Sierra Pilgrim, Haley Pulido, Samantha Verdugo, and Alondra Cisneros wrote speeches that Gary Rennie announced aloud to the crowd, while the players returned their roses to their parents/guardians as a way to thank their loved ones for their love and support. Cisneros and Verdugo translated theirs in Spanish to their parents over the microphone. Lots of sentimental tears were shed by the seniors and their younger teammates. Even the senior basketball managers Katelynn Gregory, Alyssa Reeves, and Alison Moon got to write speeches that were also read aloud by the announcer. Reeves gave her flower to assistant coach Taylor Miller, Moon gave hers to Gary the announcer, and Gregory gave hers to head coach Suzanne White. Although the Lady ‘Cats lost on their Senior Night, it was an overall successful night for the younger girls and especially for the senior players on their last night playing in a home basketball game as a Wildcat.
On Thurs. Feb. 8, the Lady ‘Cats travelled to Arvin. The Wildcats played the Bears and won 48-35. It was an aggressive night of basketball, for there were lots of injuries, hands-on, foul-outs and exchanged words. Both teams competed combatively for the win, but Taft was fortunate enough to pull through and claim a “W”. Sophomore Reagan Hamilton scored the most points for Taft, which was 23, while Cherise Strong followed in next to most points helping Taft gain 11. Sophomore Morgan Pulido had an overall 6 points, Sierra Kozloski had 4, and Sierra Pilgrim also made 4 points. It was a successful, accomplished night for Taft. They are practicing for their next game and hoping to end the season with another win.
