Varsity and JV Dominated Chavez and Wasco

Varsity and JV tennis teams shut out Wasco and Cesar Chavez, 9-0, on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

On Monday, Wasco brought its Varsity and JV teams to Taft. In the Varsity contest, “Taft swept the Tigers by winning all the close matches,” coach Jim Carnal said.

At No.1 singles, Leighton May beat Veronica Garcia, 6-0, 7-5. Dariana Calderon beat Yamilet Bustamante, 6-3, 6-3. Brisa Guizar beat Makenzie Salyards, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. In the closest match of the day, Diana Huizar got off to a slow start before beating Esmeralda Rodriguez, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Elizabeth Huizar was the first one off the court with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gisela Vargas. Rosa Silva hung on to beat Alex Albert, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.

In doubles, May and Guizar beat Garcia and Bustamante in overtime, 8-7 (9-7). The Huizar sisters beat Rodriguez and Vargas, 8-2. Alondra Cisneros and Yuvia Woggn beat Emma Bloemhof and Claire Moreno, 8-4.

Wasco dropped to 9-4 overall; 6-2 in league.

On Tuesday, Taft’s varsity beat Chavez at home. May made quick work of Ariada Romo, 6-0, 6-1. Calderon beat Bre-Ana Jara, 6-2, 7-5. Guizar beat Alania King, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), Diana Huizar had no trouble with Alondra de Santiago, 6-0, 6-2. Elizabeth Huizar was the first one off the court with a shut out of Juliana Andreas, 6-0, 6-0. Alondra Cisneros beat Leslie Nunez, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Guizar and Elizabeth Huizar beat Romo and Jara, 6-2, 7-5. Cielo Woggn and Cisneros beat Santiago and Nunez, 6-2, 6-3. And, Silva and Yuvia Woggn beat Clarissa Ramirez and Aileen Beltran, 6-1, 6-1.

Taft improved to 13-2 overall; 7-1 in league. Chavez dropped to 5-6 overall; 5-3 in league.

In the JV contest in Delano, Ivonne Gutierrez beat Hanglia Castrejon, 6-2, 6-0. Gabriela Aguilar beat Charlene Cybarglana, 6-2, 6-0. Valerie Munoz beat Mariana Moreno, 6-0, 6-3. Jessica De La Cruz beat Joselyn Gardarillo, 6-0, 6-1. Zughei Guzman beat Denise Herrera, 6-3, 6-2. And, Harmony Hartzell came from behind to beat Liane Domingo, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

In doubles, Gutierrez and Aguilar held on to beat Cybarglana and Moreno, 8-7 (10-5). Munoz and De La Cruz beat Cybarglana and Gardarillo, 8-1. Angelica Brown and Jeidy Perez picked up the forfeit win at 3 doubles when Chavez Taft’s did not have eight players.

JV improved to 8-4 overall; 6-2 in league, behind undefeated BCHS.
