Our varsity volleyball team was invited to participate in the California City tournament. Our Lady Wildcats ended up winning the tournament overall; the team played six different teams in two days. The Wildcats walked into every game unfamiliar with how the other teams played. The team really hustled during this tournament. They started the first day playing Boron, Bishop Union, and also SCCHS. All of these teams were beaten by your Lady Wildcats in only two sets. Each game helped the Wildcats improve and work on techniques.

Taft vs. Boron was the very first game of the tournament and was won in two sets. The score of the first set was 16-25 and the second set was 17-25. Our girls stayed strong and continued working together throughout the day. Taft vs. Bishop Union was also won in two sets: the first set was won 22-25 second set was won 25-20. Taft vs. SCCHS was the last game of the night, which was won in only two sets as well (27-25 and 25-20).

The girls ended the day winning every game and, afterwards, got to spend the night and work on team bonding.

The last day of the tournament started off great, the girls played a round two against University Prep. The girls kept their streak of only having to play two games; the game was won in two sets (25-7 and 25-17).

The next game was a big game for the Wildcats. This game determined whether they went on to the championships or went home. Against the Burroughs, both teams fought hard and were undefeated. Lady ‘Cats won in only two sets, the score of the first set was 25-18 and the second set 25-19. The Wildcats were excited to move onto the championship games.

The championship game was against California City. The girls started this game off strong and won the first set 25-19. After winning the first set the girls were pumped and were excited to play the next set, which didn’t start off so strong and gave Cal City got a big lead in the beginning. The girls were down 10-22 during the second set. Coach Adena Furman called a timeout and reminded the team that they were capable of beating this team. After this timeout, the Wildcats didn’t let Cal city earn another point for a long time. By the time Cal City got another point the score was 20-23. Our girls fought hard for this set but unfortunately lost 21-25. The last set was an important set for both teams. It not only brought out great intensity and showed how hard the Lady ‘Cats had really been working but also determined who received a trophy and bragging points. After being cheered on by friends and family, the girls beat Cal City 15-11, which resulted in a celebration. In the end, the Wildcats brought home yet another trophy for Taft Union High School.
