JV and Varsity Tennis Continue to Improve SSL Scores

Last Tuesday, the Taft High Varsity girl’s tennis team made it seven in a row with an 8-1 win over the Wasco Tigers, while Taft’s JV won 9-0 to remain unbeaten.
At number 1 singles, Leighton May persevered to beat the steady Veronica Garcia, 6-4, 6-4. Diana Huizar beat Yamilet Bustamante, 6-2, 6-2. Brisa Guizar came from behind to beat McKenzie Salyards, 7-5, 6-2. Dariana Calderon was the first one off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Esmeralda Rodriguez. Elizabeth Huizar finished a minute later with a double-breadstick win over Gisela Vargas, 6-1, 6-1. Wasco earned its only point at number 6 singles when Cielo Woggn won the first set over Alex Albert, 6-1, but then had trouble breathing in the near 100-degree heat and lost the next two sets, 6-4, 10-7.
In doubles, Guizar and Calderon beat Garcia and Bustamante, 8-6. Sisters Diana and Elizabeth Huizar beat Rodriguez and Vargas, 8-5. Rosa Silva and Alondra Cisneros fell behind to Claire Morano and Karina Barboza, 5-6, before winning the last three games to end the match, 8-6.
Taft improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Sequoia League. Wasco dropped to 4-3 overall; 0-1 in the SSL.
Taft easily won the JV match, also held at Wasco because the Tigers do not have a JV coach.
At number 1 singles, Yuvia Woggn beat Ema Bloemhof, 6-0, 6-2. In the closest match of the day, Gabriela Aguilar came from behind to beat Irais Ibarra, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 10-8. Ivonne Gutierrez beat Halee Nunez, 7-5, 6-3. Valerie Munoz beat Sara Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-0. Jessica De La Cruz beat Brianna Ramos, 6-1, 6-1. And, Arelie Paz blanked Lucina Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Aguilar and Gutierrez beat Bloemhof and Ibarra, 8-3. Munoz and De La Cruz shut out Gutierrez and Ramos, 8-0. Also, making their tennis debut, Kendall Robison and Zughei Guzman beat Hailey Barr and Esmeralda, 8-5.
Taft’s JV improved to 2-0; 1-0 in the SSL.

On Thursday, the Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team made it eight in a row with an 9-0 home win over the Arvin Bears, while Taft’s JV won 7-1 on the road to remain unbeaten.
In the showcase match at No. 1 singles, Leighton May came from behind to win in double overtime over the steady Sofia Torres, 3-6, 6-2, 12-10. Diana Huizar beat Carolina Cruz, 6-0, 6-3. Brisa Guizar had no problem with Jazmin Florez, 6-1, 6-0. Dariana Calderon was the first one off the court with a double bagel of Kathy Garibaldo, 6-0, 6-0. Elizabeth Huizar finished a minute later with a double-breadstick win over Iyali Regla, 6-1, 6-1. And, Rosa Silva got past Evelyn Duran, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, Guizar and Calderon rolled over Torres and Cruz, 6-2, 6-2. Diana Huizar and Cielo Woggn ran over Florez and Garibaldo, 6-1, 6-1. And, Alondra Cisneros and Yuvia Woggn blanked Jackelyn Gallardo and Paloma Gomez, 6-0, 6-0.
Taft improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the South Sequoia League. Arvin dropped to 1-4 overall; 0-2 in the SSL.
Taft travels to Robert F. Kennedy on Tuesday prior to the marquee match Wednesday when Taft hosts perennial powerhouse Bakersfield Christian.
Taft easily won the JV match, 7-1. Neither team fielded a No. 3 doubles team.
