Carlos Chavira

Students working together to make tamales

Foods teacher, Mr. Chavira stated that the final in his class is just going to be cooking a meal. However, it’s a traditional meal from a culture “different” or “weird” to most; Chavira wishes to change that and hopes that by having his students learn more about food around the world, it will inspire them to appreciate different cultures or ethnicities they may come across in life. December 14th his students to work together and make the Hispanic food item known as tamales. As a student, Keegan Ventura, stated during an interview, “It felt awesome to be able to see how other people and families bond during the holidays. And I can definitely say it is way more fun than cooking a turkey like my family does.” Students all admit that while it gets messy, they have zero complaints about their foods class and the instructor. Happy tamale making, Taft High.
