The FCC repealing Net Neutrality has been a controversial topic lately. According to the website, “Screen Rant”, the large company, Netflix, is condemning the repeal of Net Neutrality. In a tweet, Netflix stated, “We’re disappointed in the decision to gut #NetNeutrality protections that ushered in an unprecedented era of innovation, creativity & civic engagement. This is the beginning of a longer legal battle. Netflix stands with innovators, large & small, to oppose this misguided FCC order.”

On the other side of the spectrum, a statement from the FCC on their website is, “What is responsible for the phenomenal development of the Internet? It certainly wasn’t heavy-handed government regulation. Quite to the contrary: At the dawn of the commercial Internet, President Clinton and a Republican Congress agreed that it would be the policy of the United States ‘to preserve the vibrant and competitive free market that presently exists for the Internet . . . unfettered by Federal or State regulation.’ This bipartisan policy worked.” This shows the FCC’s thinking on repealing Net Neutrality.

I was able to talk to Joe from the Taft High IT department. Talking about the possible effects of the repeal, Joe said, “In Portugal you have to pay extra money for Internet. You could potentially have to pay to access the school’s website. They can control what we see, and how quickly it loads.” Joe’s thoughts on if the repeal could affect the school was, “It could if there is not enough resistance from people and law makers.” The repeal of Net Neutrality may end up affecting Taft High, and even the entirety of the United States.
