Leighton May returning a hit

The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team swept the McFarland Cougars, 9-0, Thursday in its most one-sided match of the year.

The veteran Wildcats with seven seniors and two juniors were too much for McFarland, which historically has the worst tennis teams in Kern County, Taft coach Jim Carnal said.

At No. 1 singles, Leighton May was the first one off the court with a quick 6-1, 6-0, victory over Sreypov Krouch. Diana Huizar beat Donna Hernandez, 6-1, 6-1. Brisa Guizar beat Jessica Alvarez, 6-0, 6-1. Elizabeth Huizar, dealing with a sore back, got past Vanessa Rizo, 6-0, 6-4. Cielo Woggn beat Karla Vargas, 6-0, 6-1.

Doubles featured a similar storyline. May and Diana Huizar bageled Kroch and Hernandez, 6-0, 6-0. Guizar and Claderon made some unforced errors at the start but then settled down to beat Alvarez and Andrade, 6-3, 6-0. Rosa Silva and Yuvia Woggn beat Maria Clemente and Gemma Palma, 6-1, 6-1.

Taft improved to 10-2 overall; 4-1 in the South Sequoia League. McFarland dropped to 0-5 overall and in the SSL.

McFarland has no JV coach and did not field a JV team.

Taft’s varsity travels to Shafter on Tuesday; JV is here. Then on Thursday, varsity travels to BCHS for the last meeting before BCHS leaves the SSL.
