Area qualifiers: Sawyer Maier, Rodolfo Magana, Brian Rivera, Enrique Reyes and Tyler Nguyen celebrate after advancing to the area (Kern County) individual tournament May 11-12 in Wasco.

The Taft High boys’ tennis swept the top two spots in doubles in the South Sequoia League tournament Wednesday.

Enrique Reyes and Rodolfo Magana were a dominating 48-4 in their four matches to win league. Sawyer Maier and Tyler Nguyen took second.

“Sawyer and Tyler, the No. 4 seed, upset the No. 1 seed from BCHS in one of the greatest high school tennis comebacks I have ever seen. After losing their first set, 6-0, Sawyer and Tyler came back to win the next two, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3,” coach Jim Carnal said.

This is the second time in three years that Taft has swept the top two doubles in league. Sergio Robles and Mario Quiroga and Elver Zavala and Ernie Moron accomplished the same feat in 2016.

Singles player Brian Rivera finished sixth. All five will advance to the area (Kern County) tournament at Wasco on May 11-12.

Jose Ramirez finished seventh and just missed the cut.

Bakersfield Christian’s top two players, Erik Buetow and Lukas Grimberg of Austria finished first and second, respectively, in singles.

By far the most exciting match on Wednesday was the upset by Maier and Nguyen over Caleb Bloemhof and Marcell Tanus of BCHS.

After being shut out in the first set, things looked bleak for the Taft duo. “The boys came back and won the match on the court but I give a lot of credit to assistant coach Bill Friend. In a coaching clinic, he masterfully and continually gave guidance to our net player on where to play and when to poach. That aggressive net play turned the tide of the game. On the very last play of the game, Bill said, ‘Watch this.’ He instructed Tyler to move up super close to the net as Bloemhof was serving to Sawyer. That rattled the already shaky BCHS player and he double faulted the match away. It was reminiscent of Babe Ruth calling his home run in the World Series.”

To win the championship, Reyes and Magana beat Carlos Gonzalez and Christian Julian of McFarland, 6-1, 6-0; Jerom Buton and Gian Beltran of Robert F. Kennedy, 6-0, 6-1; Pablo Villalobos and Fernando Velez, the No. 3 seed and Wasco’s top two players, 6-0, 6-0; and, in the finals, Maier and Nguyen, 6-2 in the first set and then by injury default when Maier’s calf cramped up.

Maier and Nguyen beat Ronil Lagula and Angelo Cabrillas of Kennedy, 6-1, 6-1; Peter Chavez and Juan Rios of Wasco, 7-5, 6-1; and then the BCHS team before losing to their teammates.

In singles, Rivera beat Christian Davis, Cesar Chavez’s No. 1 player, 6-2, 6-1; then lost of Ishmael Ramos, Wasco’s No. 3 player, 6-1, 6-4; then beat Brian Marquez of Arvin for the third time this season, 6-1, 6-0; then lost to Dylan Villalobos, Wasco’s No. 4 player, 7-6 (12-10), 7-5.

Ramirez beat Lionel Aginaldo, Chavez’s No. 2 player, 6-0, 6-2; got shut out by No. 2 seed Grimberg of BCHS; lost to Dylan Villalobos of Wasco, 6-2, 6-0; and then beat Marquez of Arvin, 6-0, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.
